Imax announced that Avatar grossed a record breaking $9.5 million from 178 IMAX theatres domestically

The film is scheduled to open on 25 additional IMAX screens internationally in the coming weeks, including in Japan and China. The worldwide IMAX opening weekend box office total is estimated to be $13.6 million as of the end of day Sunday, December 20, 2009.
